The programme of study for both GCSE and A Level Sport Science has been created to develop effective and independent learners with a natural progression from academic PE into the diverse landscape of sporting opportunities available throughout society.
Develop theoretical knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin physical activity and sport; preparing them for higher education and allowing students to flourish within the vast opportunities available in the sports industry.
Understand the physiological and psychological effects of exercise, encouraging students to analyse, evaluate and apply their knowledge to practical performances. Alongside gaining a deep understanding of the key socio-cultural factors that influence people’s involvement in physical activity and sport.
Improve as effective & independent learners and as critical and reflective thinkers with curious & enquiring minds.
Students opt to study GCSE PE as an academic subject in Year 10, building on their prior experiences of core PE and games. Students study a wide range of topics to develop knowledge and understanding of the human body and the physiological and psychological impact on performance and physical activity. Likewise students also gain a thorough understanding of the impact of socio-cultural influences on participation and broader topics such as the impact of media, technology and commercialism in sport. Alongside the theoretical aspect of the course, students are also assessed on three practical activities/sports of their choice as well as completing a written self reflection task as part of their coursework.
Building on the knowledge and understanding developed in GCSE PE, students naturally progress onto A Level Sport Science. As you will note in the programme of study, the topics covered are very similar to the content covered at GCSE, however students must gain a much deeper understanding of physiological and psychological aspects of sport. Biomechanics and skill acquisition is also covered in detail which further supports our approach, naming the course ‘Sport Science’ rather than A Level PE. A Level Sport Science compliments the diverse and broad opportunities to study sport at university and we see a lot of our students go on to specialise in one particular area which has been covered as part of the course.
