Home Learning

Home learning is defined as any work, or activity that students are asked to undertake outside of lesson time.  

Research shows a strong link between work completed outside of lesson time and students’ academic progress: home learning is therefore an invaluable part of our student’s learning. 

Our Home Learning Tasks will:

• Excite, engage and challenge students
• Develop self-regulated learners
• Consolidate, extend and deepen learning
• Facilitate self-review and reflection on work and to make improvements
• Ensure continuity between lessons and enable students to prepare for lessons and consolidate classwork.
• Strengthen the home-school partnership

All our home learning tasks are set using the Bromcom app available to students, and also accessible via the parental portal; students will have at least two days to complete it. Part of completing a home learning task includes giving it in on time. If a student is unable to meet a deadline due to illness, extenuating circumstances or out of school commitments it is their responsibility to discuss this with their teacher before the due date.

Home Learning Frequency Guidance

Based on current good practice, students will be expected to spend the following amount of time on homework:
In Key Stage 3, students will have a home learning timetable which they are expected to follow and will receive home learning tasks for each evening.  In term 1, to help year 7 students settle into school work, they will only receive home learning in English, Mathematics and Science; however, from term 2 they will be set tasks in all their subjects.

Year 7 will be expected to undertake about 1 and a half hours of homework per week in term 1, rising to 5 hours in terms 2-6; year 8 will undertake about 6 hours per week and year 9 about 7. 

In years 10 and 11, students should expect to receive two hours per subject each fortnight, about 9 hours per week, and in year 12 students should expect to undertake about 9 hours per week, moving to 15 hours per week in year 13.
