Our English curriculum vision is to foster a deep understanding and appreciation of the English language, its rich literary heritage, and its myriad practical applications.

The curriculum emphasises the development of critical literacy skills, enabling students to interpret, analyse, evaluate, and write texts with greater depth and confidence. It nurtures critical thinking and creativity through the study of diverse literary works, writers, and genres. The rigorous and engaging programme of study develops students' proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking, empowering them to become articulate and empathetic communicators who can contribute meaningfully to society and flourish in their future endeavours.

Our diverse and ambitious KS3 curriculum forms a strong foundation of knowledge and skills which facilitate student transition to GCSE studies. Each year of our KS3 English curriculum includes study of Shakespeare, an author or text in depth, poetry, non-fiction texts, and aspects of media. The national Spoken Language Endorsement (part of the GCSE English language requirements) is completed in Year 9.

We follow the AQA specification for GCSE English literature and language. Students study a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts and topics during their two-year course. The GCSE course provides a strong basis for students to pursue English literature and/or language at A Level, as well as other essay-based subjects. We offer English literature A-Level following Pearson Edexcel specification. English remains a well-respected and useful A Level subject, communication skills being essential for all career paths.

Extra Curricular

Extracurricular activities are an integral part of ensuring students fully engage with and enjoy all that English offers as an academic subject but also as part of everyday life. Where possible we arrange theatre, lecture, and literary festival trips. We facilitate a range of English related clubs such as our long standing Debate Society and Journalism Club. School and national writing competitions are regularly advertised and promoted.
