On Tuesday 10th November, 8EFW took part in ‘I’m a Scientist – Get Me Out of Here’, a free online event where school students meet and interact with scientists. This is an X-Factor-style competition between scientists where the students are the judges. Students challenge the scientists via fast-paced online text-based live chats and then vote for their favourite to win a prize of £500 to communicate their work with the public. Before and after the chat, students have the opportunity to ask the scientists anything they want.
Students from 8EFW were working in ‘The Heart Zone’ where five scientists worked in a range of areas, from genetic analysis of the risk of heart disease to using vesicles to regenerate the heart. The students did a half hour live web chat with Cristina Villa del Campo, who eventually went on to win the competition.
Every member of 8EFW took part and asked additional questions to the scientist. After each ‘I’m a Scientist’ event, the scientists and moderators are asked which student, from all the schools taking part, has done the best in each zone. Based on the questions he asked in the live chat and the additional questions before and afterwards, Joel Flynn was selected as the winner for ‘The Heart Zone 2015’, receiving a certificate and gift voucher.
