On Wednesday, 8th June, our Engineering Department was host to the BMWi Sales Executive and the BMW i3 from Cotswold BMWi. Helen Warner hosted a workshop for eight lucky students with an interest in the development and design of electric cars.
First, students explored the construction and technology that went into making the car and then were asked to consider any improvements or enhancements they would make to the current design for future models of the car. The students all thought carefully and creatively about the possibilities and reported back a number of suggestions, for example: rooftop solar panels to the roof, more boot space, a larger range extender, adding fly-wheels to replace the rear wheels, replacing the bonnet with aluminium instead of thermoplastic and adding a driver memory system that memorises the driving style of your family to predict the range depending on who is in the driving seat!
Later, the students’ suggestions were presented to the UK Head of BMWi and will be displayed in the BMWi showroom.
Thank you to Nigel Ledeux and Kevin Downes for organising the event, and we extend our sincere thanks to Helen Warner whose enthusiasm and expertise made this a truly memorable event for everyone involved, and we look forward to working with Cotswold BMW again in the future.
