Richard James - National Leader of Governance (NLG)

NLGs undertake up to 10 days "consultancy" (free) a year to support other schools through initiatives such as:-

  • Governor training

  • External reviews of individual schools Governance arrangements (ERG)

  • Working with or coaching newly appointed chairs

  • Supporting Heads and Chairs build constructive working relationships.


  • Chairman of two Schools. The Crypt Grammar School in Gloucester and Hopelands Preparatory School in Stonehouse.

  • The Crypt was identified as Outstanding in all categories at the last OFSTED inspection. The Crypt is a "Teaching School".

  • Hopelands is a tiny Independent School with 87 pupils. The fees are around about the same as many local state primaries.  The last ISI inspection Identified the school as Outstanding across all areas.


  • An NHS CEO or equivalent for almost thirty years serving on 5 boards.

  • Served as company Secretary and Foundation Secretary to a group of Independent Schools following retirement from the NHS.

  • Worked as a Consultant specialising in team development and supporting senior executives through the process of moving to the next job.

  • Run programs to improve Board performance and worked with CEOs and Chairs to build effective partnerships.

  • Support to younger people both with starting out on a career and with support to gain a place at the universities of their choice.

  • Over the last 18 months served as Board Director in two schools that have been identified as failing.

  • Trained Coach
