Over 100 students performed to a packed St Barnabus Church, Tuffley at our annual carol service on Wednesday 15th December. The evening showcased a wonderful range of choral and instrumental ensembles and the diversity and sheer enthusiasm of the school for music-making.
Our 70-strong choir performed an eclectic range of carols with an English theme, with particular highlights being Benjamin Britten’s ‘Hymn to the Virgin’ and John Rutter’s ‘Shepherd’s Pipe Carol’. The Year 7 trebles choir made the debut, performing ‘Adam Lay Ybounden’ and the folk carol ‘Boar’s Head Carol’, accompanied by guitars and recorders. The girls’ choir gave a beautiful rendition of Bob Chilcott’s ‘Midwinter’ and other really beautiful choral items included the chamber choir singing ‘Gabriel Ad Virginum’ and the quartet singing ‘Riu Chiu Chiu’.
There were several powerful and exciting orchestral interludes including ‘Kiji’s Wedding’, ‘A Christmas Festival’ and ‘Sleigh Ride’, alongside some readings by pupils and staff. There were several rousing congregational carols, enthusiastically sung by both choir and congregation.
All in all, this was a truly euphoric, life-affirming event, extolling the joys of performing gorgeous music in a beautiful setting: a wonderful start to Christmas!
