Literacy Intervention

The Crypt School is proud of the support it offers to students in Key Stage 3 at the lower end of its selective intake.

At the start of each term the staff review students who need support with:
•    handwriting
•    spelling
•    sentence construction
•    paragraph construction
•    writing for specific purposes (e.g. essay writing)
•    EAL
•    general attainment in English classwork and homework

These students work with a specialist English teacher in small groups of 1 to 5 students. They are extracted from their normal lessons once per fortnight. The sessions last for 30 minutes. They are on a rolling rota where possible to avoid students missing the same lesson successively. The intervention programme lasts for two terms (i.e. one old term). Each student’s progress is then reviewed. They can be signed off at that point or intervention can continue.

The Literacy Intervention programme works closely with the SEND department, sharing resources and making cross-referrals when appropriate.
